Hopping into the X-Men movies can feel like stepping into a maze. There are prequels, sequels, reboots, and confusing timelines, but honestly, that’s part of the fun. That said, figuring out how to watch X men movies in order can feel like finding a needle in a haystack.
Do you start with the originals or the prequels? Or go by release date, story timeline, or just skip the ones everyone warns you about? Not anymore! This guide will help you figure out the best way to watch the X-Men movie series in order. Wait no more; let’s explore!
The Chronological Watch Order
If you want to follow the X-Men story as it unfolds in their universe’s timeline (not in release order), here’s the Chronological Watch Order:
1. X-Men: First Class
2. X-Men: Days of Future Past
3. X-Men Origins: Wolverine
4. X-Men: Apocalypse
5. Dark Phoenix
6. X-Men (2000)
7. X2: X-Men United
8. X-Men: The Last Stand
9. The Wolverine
10. Deadpool
11. Deadpool 2
12. Logan
13. The New Mutants
14. Deadpool & Wolverine
X-Men Movies in Release Order
Since the first X-Men film was released in 2000, the series has expanded with sequels, prequels, spin-offs, reboots, and even plot rewrites for earlier movies. We understand it’s confusing! But once you’re in it, you’ll realise that’s what makes the whole experience so rewarding.
Watching the chronological order of the X-Men films offers a smoother, more story-driven experience. It lines up the events as they happen in the timeline, making character arcs and plot twists easier to follow. In contrast, the release order reflects how the franchise actually unfolded, with all its shifts in tone, style, and casting. There’s something interesting about seeing how both the story and the filmmaking evolved along the way.
X-Men (2000)
X2: X-Men United (2003)
X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)
X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)
X-Men: First Class (2011)
The Wolverine (2013)
X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)
Deadpool (2016)
X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)
Logan (2017)
Deadpool 2 (2018)
Dark Phoenix (2019)
The New Mutants (2020)
Deadpool & Wolverine (2024)
This is where it all started. X-Men introduced us to Wolverine, Magneto, Professor X, and the mutant world. It's definitely got early-2000s vibes, but it laid the groundwork for everything that came after. If you're new to the series, this one’s essential.
One of the best in the early trilogy. X2 goes deeper into Wolverine’s past and brings in a bigger threat that forces heroes and villains to work together. It’s darker and smarter and is action-packed. The film also delves into the complexities of mutant discrimination and prejudice, adding layers to the story and characters.
A supposed “cure” for mutation sparks a war between mutants and humans, dividing the X-Men and resurrecting a powerful force within Jean Grey. The Last Stand ramps up the action and introduces the deadly Phoenix but struggles with crowded storytelling. Still, it delivers emotional moments and major consequences for several beloved characters.
Logan digs into the backstory; Origins follows Wolverine’s transformation through the Weapon X program and his fractured bond with brother Sabretooth. While the film offers intense fight scenes and explores Logan’s tortured past, it’s often criticised for chaotic storytelling and an odd portrayal of Deadpool. It still provides essential context for Wolverine fans.
A fresh start for the franchise, First Class goes back to the 1960s to explore the origins of Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr’s friendship-turned-rivalry. With a contemporary retro style and younger cast, it resets the timeline while exploring themes of power, prejudice, and loyalty. A standout prequel that breathes new life into the X-Men saga.
This one’s low-key and underrated. Set after The Last Stand, The Wolverine finds Logan in Japan, grappling with immortality and loss. He’s drawn into a deadly conflict involving Yakuza, samurai, and a powerful old acquaintance who offers him the chance to be mortal. A darker, more personal take on the character, with beautiful visuals and intense action.
Days of Future Past brings together the original and prequel casts in the best way possible. When the future looks grim for mutants, Wolverine travels back to the ’70s to change history. With smart storytelling, emotional complexity, and high-stakes action, this one resets the timeline and stands out as one of the strongest entries in the series.
Deadpool changed the game for superhero movies. Ryan Reynolds nails it as Wade Wilson, a wisecracking merc with a healing factor and zero chill. It’s packed with jokes, crazy action, and breaks all the usual superhero rules. Totally different from the rest of the X-Men, and that’s what makes it so much fun.
X-Men: Apocalypse takes things to a grand scale with the return of the ancient mutant Apocalypse, who aims to reshape the world in his image. Set in the ’80s, it introduces younger versions of Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Nightcrawler. While the story can feel a bit crowded, the film offers some exciting moments and fresh faces.
Logan stands apart from typical superhero fare. It is raw, emotional, and hits you right in the feels. In a bleak future, Wolverine finds purpose in protecting a young mutant, Laura. With its brutal action and reflections on legacy and mortality, Logan delivers a poignant farewell to a beloved character. It’s not just memorable but also heartbreaking in all the best ways. Don’t skip this one!
Deadpool 2 raises the stakes with sharper humour, bigger action, and unexpected emotional depth. This time, Wade Wilson assembles the X-Force to protect a troubled young mutant from Cable, a time-travelling soldier. Balancing satire with sincerity, the film delivers a bold, fast-paced sequel that expands the world while staying true to its unique voice.
Jean Grey’s transformation into the Phoenix was meant to be the emotional climax of the saga, but it struggles to deliver. After absorbing a cosmic force, Jean becomes dangerously unstable, forcing the X-Men to make impossible choices. Despite moments of intensity and strong performances, the rushed pacing and uneven tone make it fall short of its potential.
A genre-bending spin-off with horror vibes, The New Mutants follows five young mutants trapped in a strange facility, uncovering secrets about themselves and their captors. It's smaller in scale and very different in tone. While not essential to the X-Men timeline, it offers a fresh, eerie take for those curious enough to explore.
Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) is a Marvel movie that brings together two popular characters. Deadpool is funny and wild, while Wolverine is tough and serious. They have to work together to stop Time Variance Authority from destroying their world. The movie brings humor, action, and an exciting crossover in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
