How does Mobile Number Portability work?

Mobile number portability (MNP) enables any user to switch from one operator to another while retaining their original mobile number. Here is how MNP works:

• Once MNP is requested, a Unique Porting Code is generated by sending an SMS, PORT <10 digit mobile number to port> to 1900.
• You will receive alerts at every stage about your porting/MNP status via SMS.
• A new Vi SIM will be delivered to your doorstep free of cost.
• Any subscriber can port their mobile number if not fully satisfied with existing network services.

And if a Vi prepaid subscriber wants to port number to a Vi Postpaid Connection, the validity of their prepaid account will be deactivated and the prepaid balance amount will be auto-added to their new postpaid account.

Things to note before porting a mobile number:

For people who have requested to port mobile number, it generally takes:

• 3 working days: Within the same Licensed Service Area (LSA)
• 5 working days: To another LSA or Circle
• 15 working days: Jammu & Kashmir, Assam and North East areas

It should be noted that there are a few criteria to keep in check while porting. Not following these factors might result in the rejection of your sim port request.

1. Pay all Pending bills:
Subscribers who request for mobile number portability need to pay and clear all their previous outstanding bills with their existing service provider.

2. 90 days Term before SIM Port:
One must have a minimum 90 days subscription with their existing service provider before trying to port mobile number to Vi.

3. Ongoing MNP requests:
If there is an ongoing request for a change of ownership of the existing mobile number, a new port sim request cannot be made.

4. Contractual Obligations:
There should be no contractual obligations to be fulfilled by the subscriber before exit from their current service provider.

5. Porting Prohibition:
Your porting application can be rejected if the number porting is prohibited by any court of law. 

6. Valid UPC:
Users need to provide the correct Unique porting code(UPC) while requesting mobile number portability. 

Once the mobile port sim request (MNP) is initiated, subscribers will receive an SMS indicating the porting/MNP status and the exact date and time for porting. In case there is a rejection of the UPC request, the reason for the same is shared through SMS.
